Dear Applicant:
Foundation 2000 for Children has established The Betty Gray Teacher Education Scholarship. Betty Gray, a lifelong educator in Cobb County, has served as teacher, counselor, principal, and board member. She values the teaching profession and is a tireless advocate for students in the South Cobb communities. Regarding education, Ms. Gray has said, “Education is about how effective you are in assessing where…children are when you meet them and where you want to go. Good teachers will connect with students and respect is both earned and mutual. Educators have to paint the picture of success.” The Betty Gray Teacher Education Scholarship will be awarded to students who aspire to continue the legacy of Betty Gray. High School students who plan to teach are encouraged to apply.
Applications for scholarships must be postmarked no later than Friday, January 28, 2011 Scholarship winners will be notified, and scholarships will be awarded at a luncheon on March (TBA) 2010. This scholarship program is for graduating seniors at McEachern High School, Pebblebrook High School, South Cobb High School, and the Performance Learning Center (PLC) only.
Incomplete applications and facsimiles will not be considered; however the application may be copied. Please refer to the checklist on page 7 prior to submitting the application. Mail the completed applications to:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Applicants must be graduating seniors who attend McEachern High School, Pebblebrook High School, South Cobb High School, and the Performance Learning Center (PLC). Applicants must attend an accredited college or university in Georgia and pursue a degree in Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, or Secondary Education.
Applicants must have at least a 3.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average on a 4.0 (with the exception of the PLC) scale in order to qualify for the scholarship. Applicants are required to submit an official high school transcript in a sealed envelope, along with the completed application.
Applicants are required to submit a typed essay that addresses the following topic:
“Why I want to teach”
Essays must be submitted in the following format: double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font, two page maximum, one inch margin on all sides, name should be typed in the upper right hand corner of each page.
The essay is an important part of the selection process, and will be reviewed by application raters. Ratings will be based on the following criteria:
• Creativity and/or Style
• Correct use of grammar and punctuation
• Content and organization
• Use of research materials to support the topic
Applicants are required to submit two letters of recommendation.
Applicants are required to sign a Scholarship Funds Disbursement Disclaimer.
Scholarships are to be used for educational purposes only and funds will not be distributed until winners return the Student Enrollment Verification Form. Funds will be disbursed in the name of the student and the school. Funds will be mailed to the school.
After receiving the applications, the committee will interview the finalists for the scholarship. Interviews will take towards the end of February. Candidates will be notified if they are selected for the interviews.
